CHC Designates Mite Cross-Ice Hockey Weekends
Mite players for the 2009-2010 season will have a chance to play cross-ice hockey this season as
CHC phases in the new
American Development Model. At the July 2009 CHC monthly meeting, it
was decided that all CHC mite teams will play in cross-ice games one weekend per month for the
2009-2010 season. CHC designated the following weekends as cross-ice weekends so that programs
can coordinate events: Oct 24/25, Nov 21/22, Dec 12/13, Jan 9/10, and Feb 6/7. The cross ice
game(s) can be against a single opponent, or can be in a jamboree format with other teams to
make greater use of the ice. Because this is a relatively new initiative in USA Hockey and
within Connecticut, below are two examples of how to incorporate cross-ice into your organization's
schedule. As we go along, we plan to publish a "Best Practice" document for cross-ice events.
Feedback from coaches, parents, and players is always welcome regarding your experience in cross-ice
events this season.

Ridgefield Mite Jamboree 10/24
(as reported by Ted Tregurtha)
The Ridgefield Amateur Hockey Association (RAHA) Mite Jamboree was a big success, very fun and
slightly hectic! Thanks to impeccable planning by Bud Brown (RAHA Mite Coach), the event was
scheduled down to every last second thus insuring a smooth and positive event for both players
and parents. Six teams participated, with players from RAHA, Avon, Greenwich, and New Canaan.
One lesson learned was that with approximately 95 kids on the ice, it was necessary to cut the
ice about halfway through the event. "We shuffled all the kids off, the zamboni did a quick
pass everywhere but against the boards (so we didn't need to take the barriers and other equipment
off the ice) and then we were back in business."

Mid-Fairfield Mite 3-on-3
(as reported by Gregg Zegras)
In September, Mid-Fairfield ran a 3-on-3 program for their Mite A and B teams that allowed
players to be challenged and have fun at the same time. The coaches found that their format
worked best for 24-28 kids and required 5-6 coaches on the ice. Click the link below for a
short brief on the format of their day and lessons learned.
