WCYHA Hosts Free Hockey Clinic

WCYHA Hosts Free Hockey Clinic Western Connecticut Youth Hockey Association (WCHYA) hosted a free ice hockey clinic on October 18th in Danbury, CT. The free clinic was promoted through the Danbury school system using flyers and reached over 5000 children ages 5 through 10. Divided into two groups based on ability, Coaches Oldham, Whitehead, and Raditovich from the Mite A team ran a 90-minute clinic that provided basic skill instruction and introduced the game of hockey to over 40 new kids. Players from Western Connecticut State University as well as the WCHYA Midget team were on the ice to lend a hand and serve as role models to the aspiring new skaters. "By the end of the hour, we had games going at each end of the rink," reports Rich Dibble, one of the coordinators of the clinic. Dibble adds that Danbury Arena was kind enough to loan the One Goal equipment they had as well as give free skate rentals to those who needed them.

USA Hockey has begun an initiative called Come Play Youth Hockey with the premise that the best way to create a life-long hockey player is to simply put a kid on the ice with skates and a stick (and a helmet, of course!). By providing a free trial to the sport such as this one by WCHYA, programs are able to demonstrate to parents that hockey is affordable, unique, convenient, and - most of all - fun.

The free clinic was a successful venture for WCHYA, as twelve skaters enrolled right away in Danbury Arena skating lessons or Hockey Development and they look forward to those kids returning to WCYHA in the future. WCHYA is looking forward to being a host program for the 2010 Connecticut Hockey Day event to help introduce hockey to more young skaters.

Wanted: Sports Broadcasters

Wanted: Sports Broadcasters
Have you had a lifelong dream of being the next ESPN Sports Center anchor or need an internship experience for your communications major? CT Hockey News is looking for someone to be the on-site personality for the CHC Game of the Week (GOW). Each GOW will include game footage and interviews with team players, coaches and officials of a selected CHC game, and will be highlighted in CT Hockey News over the 2009-2010 season.

This position is open to anybody (and we may choose more than one!): boy, girl, man or woman – age and/or hockey experience is not a factor. Besides having a great personality and an ability to communicate clearly, the requirements for GOW reporter(s) include:
  • You must have your own reliable transportation to/from selected games.
  • You will act as both the on-camera reporter and the behind-the-scenes organizer at each game (videographer, video equipment, video editing, and team contacts will be provided).
  • You must maintain your commitment to report on assigned game(s).
  • You must be willing to work for free (but you get all the glory!).
Interested? Please email a 30-second video of yourself and explain why you think you would be a good candidate for this position. Send your video (or a link to a posted video) to kdixon@cthockeynews.com.
